Hello, my name is girliegamer and I'm addicted to Facebook.
I'm sure everyone knows what I'm talking about when I say Facebook, right?
If you don't... really? really? It's a social networking website where you can connect with friends from all around the world, do some online activities such as play games and quizzes, and basically just shoot the breeze with other members, etc.
It was launched back in 2004, by a couple of Harvard dudes with the goal of putting the entire social experience of their college online. There's now a movie based on it called "Social Network."
It was all about exclusivity, you had to have a Harvard.edu e-mail address, but the website that would soon change the world and how we communicate and interact with each other. It was soon opened up to colleges across the country.
When I joined Facebook (ages after most of the rest of the world had) I promised myself that I would never get addicted to it.
So here is the problem, well, my problem. And I am assuming I'm not alone on this one. I'm on Facebook all the time! I go to the site not even aware that I am going to it half the time.
Lately, I've been having a serious obsession with Facebook, I turned on my computer this morning with the intention of opening my email and where did I find myself? You guessed it. Facebook.
I don't know what it is, there's not much to do over there but I find myself logging on several times a day.
I just like seeing what everyone’s up to, checking out my friends’ and relatives’ pictures.
I am addicted! Admitting is the first step to recovery right? Sign me up for Facebook rehab.
But I'm not alone!
Facebook now has 500 million members worldwide. That's alot of people!
Want to see what people are up to but have no interest in really talking to them in real life? No problem with Facebook. If someone has an open profile you can click around on their page like you are their BFF, seeing all their pictures, friends' comments, and status updates. You can locate exactly where someone is and how they're feeling today in 3 minutes or less.
While I only used to log on to make sure any photos posted of me were flattering, I can now check photos of a friend of a friend without knowing them or even caring to add them as a friend. I try not to change my status update more than twice a week but I have given up trying to fight the urge to comment on whatever other people say. Even when I am not sure I have a good comment, I make sure to at least leave a smiley to let them know that I know what they were saying. Even if I don’t!
I kinda figured the whole Facebook allure out, people need to be nosy.
I mean what better way to waste some time than to stick your nose into other people’s business without them really knowing you’re doing it. Relationships, friends, hobbies, and moods… there’s not much you can’t find out about someone on Facebook, unless they’ve got you set to ‘limited profile’ in which case they’re just being weird! I mean come on, why be on there then?
Sadly,the most common letdown is that usually nothing really exciting has happened in the last 30 to 40 minutes (the amount of time that has lapsed since I last looked.) But I will keep checking nonetheless. What can I say?
According to an article on the Huffington Post, a Dutch company has developed a software that can destroy all posts and personal information from your Facebook (and Twitter) accounts.
Some 3,000 people have already used the free program with another 90,000 on the waiting list. You just hand over your passwords and watch as your Facebook friends disappear - until there's just an empty screen. Wow, now that's what I call an intervention!
I've come up with some Facebook obsession warning signs below. This may be the start of a support group for Facebook addicts. The group will be listed on Facebook, where you can become a fan of the group, add pictures, look at pictures of other cute people who are in the group, and write on their Facebook wall!
Warning signs that you may be addicted to Facebook:
1. Facebook is your home page.
2. You update your status more than twice a day.
3. You have over 500 "friends" half of whom you've never actually met.
4. As soon as you step away from your computer you're on FB on your phone.
5. You change your profile picture more than a 13year old girl.
6. You've checked your FB page while reading this!
