Poor Penny! She has just been fired from her job of 5 years at the paper factory just for throwing her co-worker a piñata party! Sick of it all, our poor hopeless main character doesn’t wallow in her misery for long though, Penny decides to pack her bags, grab her beloved dog Midas, her last $200 paycheck, and head off to Las Vegas and try her luck!
Off to Sin City!
Don't be fooled by the name however (I was, I even put on my lucky socks) “Jackpot Match-Up: Penny's Vegas Adventure” isn't a blackjack, roulette or poker or even a slots game for that matter - instead, it's a 3-in-a-row puzzler with casino-like sights and sounds. This may come as a disappointment to some of you out there looking to play a good old fashioned casino game. So I am here to forewarn you as well as save you a lot of time (ah, don’t mention it, it’s what I ‘m here for) if that’s what you were looking for, then turn around now and hop right back on your tour bus!
Most of the casinos are locked in the beginning of the game, but Penny scrounges up enough dough to play at seedy Buffalo Billions Gamblin' Hall. It is here that we learn the basics of the gameplay, other casinos unlocked fairly quickly- including ones with a medieval, pirate, and Roman theme. You’ll help Penny match colorful tiles in order to win big money. Each tile has a different picture on it, such as cowboy boots, a sheriff’s badge and horseshoes placed on a game board that resembles a slot machine. At the top of the screen, you will see which two, three or four combos you will need to make by connected adjoining tiles. For example, you may need 2 horseshoes and a sheriff's badge; it doesn't matter what the order is, as long as the proper tiles are linked.
As you successfully match, watch the stack of coins in your pot grow and grow. But don’t take too long matching or you'll forfeit all the money in the pot. Cash in the pot too quickly and you'll leave behind unclaimed coins! Spin the bonus wheel, smash crates and use special power moves to increase your odds of hitting the jackpot and help Penny turn her luck around. For example, one power-up - will reshuffle the order of all the tiles. Another one may be to reset the clock back to the beginning or changing all the tiles on the board from one graphic (boots) to another (gun).

But what good is raking in all this cash if you can't spend it right? After hitting it big in the first casino, Penny pampers herself and her dog to some spa treatments, gets some new clothes and picks up a swanky new diamond-encrusted collar too( for Midas). In the second casino, she treats herself to a new ‘do, jewelry and even changes her banana seat bicycle to a motorcycle with a side car! And so on and so forth, you get the idea right? There 20 or so upgrades that help keep the game fun and amusing. If you are a shopaholic, you will enjoy helping Penny blow her loot with all of her extravagant spending decisions as well as unlocking new casinos along the way. My only question is, whatever happened to hotel comps?
I loved, loved, loved all of the graphics in this game! Every single one of the characters (even Midas) had such great goofy, comical, expressive faces, you can tell a lot of care and hard work went into the overall look of the game. It was well worth it! Kudos to the artists, they really hit the jackpot here!
The sounds of the game are pretty much what you would expect, the standard fare of casino sounds; loud bells and coins clanking.
Whatever Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas
“Jackpot Match-Up” is a cute new take on the 3 in a row match puzzler, but it's not perfect. For one, it’s not a casino game-despite what the title implies! Clears throat, as well as some minor disappointments within the gameplay for example, if you click on the wrong tile let's say, or want to change the order of the tiles you're connecting for strategic reasons, you are unable to do so by just right clicking on it to clear it. This would've have been a welcome addition - especially given the fact you're racing against the clock to make as many matches before the time runs out. Also, even though the tile graphics change between casinos that’s about all that does. Sadly, it's the same game more or less between all the casinos, it would have been great to see a new puzzle game concept altogether, which is what I thought was going to happen.
So is it going to be the smash hit puzzle game of the season? Nope. But is it a pleasant, light hearted puzzle game? You bet-cha!
