I went to see the movie "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" just the other day and it was somewhere between "fantastic" and "awesome." I say we go with "fantawesome!
Did ya know it's based on a series of graphic novels, which up until just recently I've never heard of but which I hear around the grapevine are really good.
The movie was also getting a lot of buzz, it's directed by Edgar Wright, the same guy who did "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz". Now you know right then and there that "Scott Pilgrim" is"fantawesome!
The story is about a guy named Scott Pilgrim (played by Michael Cera). He lives in Toronto with a gay roomate, he's unemployed and is in a band called the Sex Bob-Ombs (get the Super Mario Bros. reference?)
Anyway, Pilgrim's life was kinda ordinary and hum-drum until a pink haired girl named Ramona rollerbladed into his world that is.
So begins the oldest storyline in the book: Boy meets Girl. Boy gets Girl.Boy must fight for Girl's honor.
The only difference here is Boy must fight Girl's 7 Evil Exes! 7 Evil Exes that all have superpowers! Talk about baggage.
And fight Scott does -a bit too much by the end, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
Plenty of Kapows and Ka-chings
In the world of Scott Pilgrim, everybody can rock, and everybody can hold their own in combat. More like Mortal Kombat -literally. (There is absolutely no explanation for how Scott himself developed superpowers; they just kind of show up and you just have to roll with it as part of the game.)
Scott doesn't just beat them up, he destroys them till they burst into a bunch of coins. Haha- brilliant! But that's just the tip of the iceberg!
Let me get to the good stuff, Edgar Wright has made what could be called a game-changer film – the whole kit and kaboodle of it, from the spelled out on screen sound effects (Blam!) the flashy fight scenes, but the combination with graphics, animation and comic-book style cut scenes I've ever seen.
There are pop culture references galore thrown into the mix - old and new.
Facebook-like stats subtitled for every character for example and then later on it even tosses in the "Seinfeld" theme song for kicks, and so on. What a combination! Once again fantawesome!
If your a gamer especially those from the late 80s and/or comic books (sorry graphic novels), the more you'll appreciate what "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" has to offer.
Michael Cera who plays Pilgrim has been getting a lot of bad rap for his performance here and for the life of me I can't understand why. Yeah so what, he's still playing the winy, mopey,monotone nerd that he always does. It's an act that would be getting old by now if he didn't do it so darn well. Like his characters in "Juno" and "Superbad" That's what Scott Pilgrim is- the underdog you root for and he's perfect at it.
Chock Full Of Nuts
My only complaint is that the movie is a wee bit too long and things start to repeat themselves. By the time we get to evil ex No. 7, the repetition of Scott fighting off Ramona's former flames had worn a little thin.
The first part of the movie was so funny I had a goofy smile on my face. But by the second, I started wishing Ramona had three fewer exes and could just close the deal with Scott.
Look, I'm neither hip or cool. If you rounded up my age you'd hit 40 and up until a few weeks ago if you asked me if I'd read the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels I'd have said "Scott who now?" In other words, I'm old. But fooey with all that. I had a blast watching the whole darn thing.
To quote the movies tagline it's "an epic of epic epicness."
